Is Bandwith.org a non-profit organization?
No. While the website bandwith.org does contain the suffix .org, we are not a non-profit organization. The URL designation is not strictly reserved for non-profit organizations and we apologize for any confusion.
Who is Bandwith?
The company BandwithRadio, LLC is comprised of three co-founders, Tony, Jake, and George. All of whom are either from Eau Claire or went to college there. When not working hard, playing hard or spending time with family, these guys are looking for new music!
We are three individuals dedicated to opening new avenues for under-represented musicians. At the risk of sounding corporate, here is our our mission statement:
“To utilize the power of the internet to give under-represented and independent artists a powerful tool to display their works to the public”
In short, we want to give great underground music and musicians more chances to be heard!!
What makes bandwith.org different than other sites?
- Unlike other sites, bandwith.org is dedicated to unsigned and independent musicians.
- Unlike other sites, bandwith.org is an all-in-one store and music source.
- Unlike other sites, bands can sell their music and be heard on a related radio station (once bandwithradio.com is launched).
- Profiles of bands are controlled completely by the bands!
- Band profiles are free of third party advertising.
- Band play-dates are compiled for listeners to find local shows easily.
- We are not corporate sponsored.
Feel free to ask any specific questions about how we are different than other internet music sites.
How Can We Survive?
Listeners of the radio station, BandwithRadio.com, pay a small subscription fee ($3/month or $25/year) to hear NEW and ORIGINAL music. This fee helps pay the bills so BandwithRadio, LLC can keep afloat.
We receive a few pennies from each download (the band/label receives the lions’ share). BandwithRadio pays the sales tax for the listener and the transaction fee for the band (averaging anywhere from 30-40 cents per song). After these transactions, the band receives 60% of the retail price while BWR normally sees a few pennies. These pennies help us afford sending the checks to the bands (postage, check production, etc).
We have limited ad space on BWR sites in order to give us some pocket change for future expansion and to help support small local businesses when we can support small local businesses through our geographical search engine.
In short, we believe that if we play by the rules, are honest with people, and rely heavily on the power of a firm handshake, we will be successful and help gifted artists be successful as well.
How do we get all of this great music?
Bands and labels are either contacted directly by us or contact us directly through our web site. If the band or label feels that we can help get their music out to the public, they are free to join our site.
We do not upload music ourselves. The band knowingly uploads and allows play of their songs on our station. In-other-words, our songs are streamed legally with no music being pirated!
Are we listed with PROs (Performance Rights Organizations) like SoundExchange?
No. We do not need to work with PROs because the radio play of songs uploaded by bands is done voluntarily and after the band or representative of the artist willingly agrees to our terms of service which includes specific licensing agreements.
Do these licensing agreements extend to other music sites or radio stations?
No. The waiver of rights is limited to play-time on internet sites run by BandwithRadio, LLC, i.e. http://bandwith.org and http://bandwithradio.com. Therefore allowing bands to do business with other stations at their discretion.
Does BandwithRadio require all of an artists works upon agreeing to licensing?
No. Bandwith leaves all decisions about music and what gets put on bandwith.org and bandwithradio.com to the musicians themselves. We want to work with artists to benefit them.
